Why Great Northern Paper Company disappeared

The August and September 2005 issues of magazine contained a two-part opinion piece by David Woodbury which presents, from his experience as a GNP employee from the 1970s through the 1990s, what the many elements were that conspired to destroy that company.

The roughly 3000-word excerpt in BangorMETRO, with photos from the collection of Wally Paul and Joel Neal, is condensed from an 9000-word memoir which is found on this web site at Out on a Limb, under the heading The Fall of Great Northern Paper.

(You may also follow this icon to download a PDF version of the full memoir.  Right- click and "Save Link As..."  To view each portion as it appeared in the magazine, click on August or September, or right-click to save it to your computer.)

If you haven't found BangorMETRO on the newsstand, you can read the excerpted parts at www.bangormetro.com.  And while you're there, consider subscribing to this great regional periodical.
